The word "plastic" in "plastic surgery" is derived from the ancient Greek work "plastikos," which means to mold or give form. Plastic surgery includes both the reconstructive and aesthetic subspecialties.
Ironicaly the driving force behind most plastic surgery developments during the early 1900s was war, with the awful injuries it often inflicts on its participants. In fact it was World War I, wich catapulted plastic surgery into a new specialty. Never before physicians had been required to treat so many and such extensive facial and head injuries. Wounds caused by modern weapons required innovative restorative procedures.
During Peace Time the basic principles of the plastic surgery have made possible to reconstruct deformities like the cleft lip or facial paralysis ( See pictures). Aesthetic surgical procedures have been developed during the last three decades as patients and physicians realized the improvement of the physical appearance and self-esteem obtained after the Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Bermudez has been driven by the same forces during the last 8 years (as soon he returned from a Fellowship in the USA) he has combined a busy Private Cosmetic Practice with his Reconstructive work at the Military Hospital in Bogotá. That is the reason why you will find such different topics treated by one great surgeon.
